about

Sunshines on a Fallen Tree is a composition made for a new immersive sound and light installation by Pif-Paf for 2023.
The sculpture is our response to Ash Dieback - a homage to and Requiem for the Ash Tree and our intertwined relationship with it as friend, habitat and a material.
Walk through its branches, be seated in the canopy and bath in flickering light as the soundscape invites you into the Ash Tree's moment of decline and the sunshine and energy in the woodland glade when a large tree falls.

Created by Eleanor Hooper and Kate Griffin - A three part requiem moving through grief and loss to hope and then regrowth.
Complex organic vocal layering punctuated with synthetic and modulated vocals move symbiotically with a classical score played out on old piano.
Sonic memories of Ash Trees are interwoven into the composition - Hear field recordings of dawn and dusk chorus, birds taking flight from a falling tree, calls of Tawny owls, bats and the Great spotted Woodpecker. Ash leaves hissing in the wind, branches crunching under foot and its timber being crafted for chairs and a horse drawn carriage.

Sunshines On A Fallen Tree carves a space to meditate on what woodland brings us, on loss, on how we can nurture those trees that survive and on the new growth we must fill the void with. It’s an invitation to reflect more broadly on the energy and optimism we need to find to survive and nurture our communities non-human and human as the Climate Crisis deepens.
